In spite of the great deal of discomfort that gastro-esophageal reflux disorder or GERD causes in a person suffering from it, there is some comfort to be found in the fact that its symptoms are usually short-lived and occur infrequently. But should you be relaxing because of this? Not at all. It is worthwhile to develop an understanding of all the usual symptoms of GERD in order to understand the severity of the condition. For instance, when the refluxed acid in the esophagus causes simple irritation or inflammation, the condition is commonly known as esophagitis. However, when the damage is more extensive, it may be termed as erosive esophagitis.
Medical sciences define GERD as chronic symptoms of mucosal damage, perpetrated by unnatural acid reflux from the stomach to the esophagus. GERD results from short-lived or enduring changes in the functioning of the LES or lower esophageal sphincter located at the junction between the esophagus and the stomach. This causes a reflux of the acidic gastric contents of the stomach into the esophagus. The reflux may sometimes reach as high up as the throat, causing what is known as the Laryngopharyngeal Reflux disease.
The most common symptom associated with GERD or acid reflux is heartburn. However, contrary to its name, it actually has nothing to do with heart. It is vaused by enteric and gastric issues and occurs only when the lower esophageal sphincter fails to control the one-way flow of consumed food matters and causes small amounts of the acidic stomach content to leak back into the esophagus. The esophagus, unlike the stomach which is heavily fortified with a thick mucus lining to protect it from the strong digestive acids, gets seriously affected by the acidic nature of the refluxed contents and triggers off a burning sensation in a person that is felt in the abdomen, the chest and the throat.
In some instances, the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease may be noticed without any sign of inflammation or injury to the esophagus. In medical lexicon, this is referred to as non-erosive esophageal reflux disease or NERD, and is less serious than a full-blown case of GERD. In fact, NERD patients show no signs of inflammation or erosion in the esophagus. However, they may experience the same kind of symptoms felt by regular GERD patients, such as burning sensations beneath the breastbone, sometimes for as long as 3 months or more! The condition, as explained by medical experts, suggest over-exposure of the nerves (lying near the surface of the lining) to the acid causing them to penetrate the layers and triggering the painful and prolonged symptoms.
Another common GERD symptom is Barrett’s esophagus, which may lead to serious changes in the tissue lining the esophagus and may be a precursor to cancer.
Another condition, which is referred to as Eosinophilic Esophagitis, results in varying degrees of difficulty in swallowing or may even cause pain. This symptom is noticed in cases where the esophagal lining develops furrows and rings.
When it comes to a complete treatment of the acid reflux condition, merely treating the symptoms of GERD will not prove to be of much use. Treat the symptoms with conventional medications today, and they are sure to return in a few days. What one should really do is address the problem at its root level and eliminate the real causes of the condition. Only through affecting a cure from deep within, you will be able to really cure acid reflux for good. The answer lies in opting for the holistic mode of treatment. Holistic remedies offer the most comprehensive treatment that suggests simple lifestyle changes and dietary adjustments that really do wonders. By identifying and eliminating the root causes of GERD, it can bring about truly permanent relief.
