Alternative Acid Reflux Treatments

Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux. Acid reflux can cause painful symptoms for the rest of your life, especially if you don’t take the necessary steps to ease the symptoms, as well as seek medical treatment for the damage caused by acid erosion traveling into the esophagus and the throat. There are many natural treatments that may be helpful in treating your acid reflux symptoms that can help you avoid over the counter and prescription medications. You can do things to help make your acid reflux easier to handle, if you are willing to do so. You don’t have to give up everything you love, or make major changes; just small steps will make a big difference in most cases.

To treat your heartburn and acid reflux, you have to take the time to determine what is causing it. If you can’t pinpoint a certain food or cause, then you may need to consult with your physician for some diagnostic testing, to rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Usually, acid reflux is caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, lying down after eating, overeating, sleeping in a completely flat position, and some prescription medications.

If you acid reflux is related to diet, then there are a number of things you can do that may be helpful. Try eating smaller meals, and stay away from fried or spicy foods. Drink water or milk rather than alcohol or caffeine, and don’t eat close to bedtime. It takes about two hours for food to completely digest once it is eaten, so you should remain upright for at least that length of time. Change your normal diet to include healthier foods, such as leafy green vegetables, whole grain breads and pastas, and fruits, just remember to avoid citrus fruits, due to the acid they contain.

Exercise is recommended for anyone who has a digestive condition, such as acid reflux. By exercising for at least thirty minutes a day, you will find that your foods moves better through your system, helping to eliminate your symptoms. Since being overweight also worsens your acid reflux problem, exercise and diet changes help due to burning the extra calories, leading to weight loss.

Try to cut back on your smoking and alcohol consumption, as these have been proven to cause acid reflux, or at the very least to worsen the symptoms that accompany it.

Check out some natural remedies as well, do some online research, talk to your doctor, or check with your local health food merchant, who can tell you what products tend to help with the symptoms of acid reflux. Just remember, that some natural or herbal medicines can counteract with prescription medicines that you may be taking, so before you start treating yourself, you should always seek the advice of a physician.
