Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, is an almost completely avoidable disorder. When the stomach is unable to control the production of acid causing it to back up into the esophagus and throat this condition is known as heartburn or acid reflux. Once in a while there is a medical reason for this. Typically however acid reflux is caused by what we do to ourselves. In this article we will talk about some of the major acid reflux causes and what you can do to avoid them and stay comfortable. Eating the wrong foods is the most common cause of acid reflux. When it is caused by the wrong foods it is called heartburn, which is generally temporary. Regular heartburn sufferers should think very carefully about their food choices. Do you eat large amounts of spicy food? Do you eat a lot of chocolate? Does your food usually contain a lot of garlic? Heartburn can also be caused by foods containing tomatoes. While these are fairly common ingredients, avoiding them isn’t that difficult. It might not be fun to cut chocolate out of your diet, but isn’t that better than having to deal with the pain of heartburn?
In some cases, acid reflux is caused by medications. It has become fairly well known that muscle relaxers can cause acid reflux and heartburn. In some cases, drugs taken to treat blood pressure also cause heartburn and acid reflux. Some people even suffer from acid reflux symptoms after taking over the counter medications that thin the blood, such as Advil and ibuprofen. These medications and any others that contribute to acid reflux symptoms are best avoided by people with sensitive stomachs.
Some people, of course, must take them for medical reasons, and in this case you should see if your doctor can recommend something else instead or a way to minimize these troublesome side effects.
An acid reflux attack can happen if you bend over after eating a heavy meal. More acid gets produced when the stomach is full so it can break down the food for fuel. The fuller your stomach the more likely that the flap that keeps the food and acid in the stomach will flutter. You can end up with acid in your esophagus, or even your mouth, when you bend over because that can cause the flap to fail. Stay upright after you eat!
You can minimize the importance of acid reflux in your daily life. If you understand the major acid reflux causes, all you need to do is avoid them and you can lead a perfectly normal life. For the most part the causes of heartburn are basic lifestyle choices. If the problem is caused by a particular type of food, for example, you can avoid this easily enough. While acid reflux is sometimes caused by a certain medical issue, more often it’s the result of simple actions that can easily be changed.
