What You Need To Know About Your Stomach And Acid Reflux

By Rudy Silva

Your stomach was made to be an acid chamber, so it could digest protein. It was designed to keep its pH 3.0 or less.

When your stomach’s pH moves above 3.0, it automatically produces more acid to bring the pH down below 3.0.

Your stomach is happy and working like it should when its pH is 3.0 or less because it can do the job it was intended to:

* break protein into its individual amino acids

* prepare vitamins and minerals to be absorbed in the intestines

* destroy incoming bacteria and pathogens

* reduce chances of coming down with stomach cancer

* keep stomach content acidic so when it goes into the duodenum, it triggers pancreas digestive juices.

* reduces the chances of having allergies, skin disease, asthma, depression, lupus, grave’s disease, osteoporosis, accelerated aging, and other conditions.

What is heartburn or acid reflux?

Acid reflux or heartburn is a condition where your stomach acid has gone to areas where it does not belong. Specifically it has moved into your esophagus, which is the long tube that comes from your throat to your stomach. There, this acid will burn and destroy tissue lining.

If you have heartburn or acid reflux, you will feel a burning or painful sensation coming up your chest. Stomach acid has push back up into your esophagus through a valve that is between your esophagus and upper stomach.

Acid reflux is the movement of your stomach acidic contents moving into your esophagus. Heartburn is the result of the stomach content in your esophagus – the pain or burning sensation you feel in your chest.

What is the cause of heartburn or acid reflux?

Heartburn is caused by the esophagus valve opening and allowing acid to “reflux” or move up into your esophagus where it burns your sensitive tissue. Heartburn is not caused by excess stomach acid, as is promoted by the medical community. The major cause is a faulty esophagus valve, called the lower esophageal sphincter, LES, which allows acid back into an area where it does not belong.

What is the recommend medical treatment?

Doctors prescribe what the pharmaceutical company’s create and push. A few of these drugs are:

* Prosilec

* AcipHex

* Nexium

* Protonix

* Antacids

What do these drugs do?

They either neutralize or block the formation of stomach acid causing its pH to go above 3.0. As the acid pH moves up to 4 and higher, it is becoming more alkaline. Under these conditions it will not burn your sensitive esophageal tissue and the result is you do not feel the burning sensation. This leads you to believe that you are cured, but you have to continue to use the drug to be cured.

What are the side effects of this medical treatment?

The side effects of using these drugs are that it keeps your stomach at a pH higher than 3.0 and your stomach is not allowed to stabilize its pH to 3.0 or less.

You now have a stomach that exists with its chemical make up “out of spec.” Do you accept or produce products that are “out of spec” and expect these products to work as they were intended? I think not.

What are the natural remedies to use for heartburn or acid reflux?

The natural remedy and lifestyle for eliminating heartburn or acid reflux is to:

* stop doing and eating the things that promote acid reflux

* start doing the things that help eliminate acid reflux

* start taking natural remedies that will help to strengthen or normalize your lower esophageal sphincter, LES.

In another article, I will discuss the above three items and give you some ideas on what you can do to relieve or cure your heartburn and stop acid reflux.

One of the secrets in controlling and eliminating heartburn and acid reflux is to take HCl acid pills. Heartburn often occurs not because of excess acid in the stomach but because of not enough acid in the stomach. This will be explained in the next issue. But taking HCl pills should be done under the direction of your doctor.

Your stomach is your first line of good health. Keeping your stomach working right will assure you that you will get the right nutrition into your blood to prevent the many diseases that occur when you are under nourished.

Acid Cure Reflux

By Ali Pahlavani

Acid reflux is a disorder that can affect the digestive tract. Many of us have experienced the burning sensation that takes place just behind the breastbone. This burning sensation has many different names, with heartburn being the more commonly known name. It is always best when stopping the rising acid cure reflux symptoms as soon as possible as well.

Acid reflux happens when the acids from digesting foods comes back into the lower esophagus area. This occurs when the LES or lower esophageal sphincter muscle gets weakened or functions improperly. The burning sensation is due to the fact that the esophageal lining is unable to withstand the rising acidic levels. This is acid reflux.

There are many different ways that you can cure or ease the acid reflux pain. The treatments range from medical therapy to surgical methods. These medical treatments and surgery are all designed with the hope of completely eliminating acid reflux from our lives altogether.

The medical ‘acid cure reflux’ is usually antacids. Generally, antacids should be taken and used more often. Many people have a preference for liquid antacids rather than the tablet variety. Antacids should be taken at least 30 to 60 minutes after you eat.

There are also two Alginic Acid and Antacids that place a layer of foam over the stomach acidic juices to prevent reflux. These tablets need to be chewed well so that the chemicals within them may be activated and the healing properties get released.

There are some medications that can be taken that have the ability to reduce acid reflux pain and eliminate the possibility of the stomach acid refluxing into the esophagus by strengthening the LES muscle. You should be aware that these medications can have side effects to them. You will need to talk to your doctor before you begin a course of treatment using those medications.

Reglan which is known as metoclopramide and Urecholine which is known as bethanecol both directly increase the strength of the LES muscle. They both are known to have side effects occurring from them. The medication called Propulsid otherwise known as Cisapride has been taken off the market due to its cardiac side effects.

Then there are prescription medications that can be taken for relief from acid reflux. However, you will need to check with your physician regarding their side effects. Some of these drugs actually lower the strength of the LES muscle. These include the anti-spasmotics like Levsin, Librax, and Bentyl. Then there are the drugs that block the calcium intake. These are Procardia, Cardizem, Calan, and Isoptin.

Another type of ‘acid cure reflux is Endoscopic Surgery. Here the surgery is accomplished by a laparoscopic technique where the surgery is accomplished through tiny holes in the belly button and upper abdomen. Recovery is quicker with this technique. There are as you see a number of these ‘acid cure reflux’ methods, just waiting for you to try them out, and get cured from your acid reflux.

The Most Common Causes Of Acid Reflux Explained

By Kathryn Whittaker

What is Acid Reflux? Acid Reflux is also known as GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. So what causes it? Its cause is said to be complex. There almost certainly are numerous causes, and diverse causes may be found in many patients or even in the same individual at various times. It is characterized in that a small number of patients with GERD produce unusually large amounts of stomach acid, but this is unusual and not a contributing factor in most patients.

The causes of Acid Reflux are found in the lower esophageal sphincter, hiatal hernias, emptying of the stomach, and esophageal contractions. The lower esophageal sphincter or (LES) is possibly the most significant factor for preventing reflux. The esophagus is a muscular tube that extends from the lower throat to the stomach. The LES is a particular ring of muscle that surrounds the lower-most end of the esophagus where it connects to the stomach.

The muscle that makes up the LES is constantly in use, constricting and closing off access from the esophagus into the stomach. This closing of the passage prevents reflux. When food or saliva is swallowed, the LES opens for a few seconds to let the food or saliva pass from the esophagus into the stomach, and then it closes up again. For patients with GERD defects of the LES are pretty common.

Two of these defects involve the function of the LES. The first is an unusually weak tightening of the LES, which decreases its capability to avoid stomach acids refluxing into the esophagus. Second is an irregular relaxation of the LES, called transient LES relaxations. Usually, they go in sync with swallowing and pause for a long time, up to a few minutes. As a result, these protracted relaxations permit reflux to take place without difficulty. The temporary LES relaxations occur in patients with GERD most frequently after meals when the stomach is swollen with food. Hiatal hernias add to reflux, even though the way in which they add to the problem is not clear.

Many patients with GERD have hiatal hernias, but others do not. As a result, it is not essential to have a hiatal hernia to have GERD. Additionally, many patients have hiatal hernias but do not have GERD. It is not exactly clear how or why hiatal hernias occur. As mentioned earlier, swallowing is vital to removing acid in the esophagus. Swallowing causes a ring-like wave of tightening of the esophageal muscles, which constricts the inner cavity of the esophagus. This tightening, referred to as peristalsis, starts in the upper esophagus and moves to the lower esophagus. It thrusts food and saliva which is in the esophagus into the stomach.

In patients with Acid Reflux, more than a few abnormalities of contraction have been described. Most reflux during the day takes place after to meal times. This reflux almost certainly is due to transient LES reductions that are caused by distention of the stomach with food.

If you suspect you are suffering from Acid Reflux, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps.

Acid Reflux And Looking Younger!

By Charles Stewart Richey

Many people suffer daily from the effects of acid reflux, to one degree or another. Unfortunately, the constant strain of this condition on the body can lead to premature aging.

The reflux of stomach gas and fluids during the night, even on a modest level, inhibit proper sleep patterns. It is a known fact that sleep is the most important factor affecting the aging process. If you do not get enough quality sleep at the R.E.M. level, you face each day with low energy, which can be described as a form of chronic fatigue. This syndrome will eventually drag you down and make you feel and look older than you should. It may even shorten your life. Many people are not even aware that they suffer from this condition.

Acid reflux or gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) occurs when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) relaxes and allows gas and fluids from the stomach to move upward into the esophagus. The LES is a ringed muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. It opens in order to allow food to enter the stomach, and then closes in order to keep the digestive fluids where they belong. It is when this muscle is too relaxed or damaged, that the contents of the stomach can escape up into the esophagus thereby causing acid reflux.

The medical community would have us to believe that drugs are the only answer to the problem of gerd. Of course this is not true. Antacids are, at best, a temporary fix and are loaded with harmful ingredients such as sodium and aluminum. PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec should only be used for eight weeks, at most. It says so right on the label. Furthermore, these drugs only mask and hide the symptoms and they have hundreds of harmful side effects.

The acid reflux condition can be the result of poor eating habits or even the aging process itself. We all know that certain foods can trigger indigestion; tomato sauce, raw garlic and onions, chocolate, coffee and alcohol. The ingestion of these foods can make you acidic in nature, resulting in acid reflux. Yet most of us can’t resist one or more of these items on a daily basis. Besides eliminating “trigger” foods from our diets, there are many natural herbs and supplements that can be helpful in staving off this malady.

Chronic indigestion can also be caused by a lack of hydrochloric acid. Some people produce insufficient amounts of stomach acid as they grow older. Besides the proper digestion of food, hydrochloric acid is necessary to keep harmful bacteria, which are found in the digestive track, in check. Without this defense, infections can develop which make the acid reflux condition even worse. This particular condition can be improved with hydrochloric acid supplements, or even ingesting small amounts of apple cider vinegar. Although these conditions are different in nature, they both cause acid reflux and can result in premature aging.

Other things that should be considered in dealing with this condition are:

* Smoking cessation (Smoking creates an acidic body)

* Loosing weight

* Eating small portions of food throughout the day

* Chewing food well and eating slowly

* Eating at least three hours before retiring

There are many subtle changes in lifestyle which can remove the threat of the acid reflux condition. By eliminating this unnecessary and harmful strain on the body, one can live a more healthy life. Getting better quality sleep will increase your chances of retaining life-force, which means living a longer and more youthful existence.
