What Causes Acid Reflux?

The definition of acid reflux is simple, as is the underlying cause; however, the cure is not so easy to find for acid reflux sufferers around the world. Basically, acid reflux is what occurs when digestive juices are pushed up into the esophagus, which causes the painful irritation that so many acid reflux sufferers have to deal with on a regular basis. Acid reflux can be triggered by any number of causes and you have to determine what causes your symptoms in order to find out the best treatment and prevention methods.

The sphincter muscle that is located between the esophagus and the upper section of the stomach is where the problem of acid reflux often begins, and as it malfunctions, this sphincter allows digestive juices to flow back into the esophagus, instead of down into the stomach where they belong. In normal digestive tracks, this sphincter stays closed, but in people who have acid reflux, it opens, causing the problem.

Acid reflux can be caused by many different varying situations all that relate to the opening of this sphincter muscle. Some people who have acid reflux just have a weak sphincter valve, and they don’t really have to do anything to make it open, it just does, causing their burning, and pain associated with acid reflux disease.

Occasionally, this acid gets thrown all the way up from the esophagus into the back of the throat, leading to speaking problems, even leading to breathing difficulties, or even asthma, if it gets inhaled into the bronchial tubes. When this happens, the person may completely lose their voice altogether, or may sound really hoarse, as if they are sick.

Acid reflux may be worsened by eating certain foods, prescription and over the counter medicines, overeating, and smoking, excessive drinking, or wearing excessively tight clothing. People who are overweight are also more often to suffer from the effects of acid reflux. The extra weight that they carry puts increased pressure on the internal organs of the body, constricting the stomach, causing acid and digestive juices to flow out as well. Spicy foods also bring on acid reflux attacks, and other foods, varying from person to person. There are certain prescription and over the counter medications that also cause acid reflux and weakening of the sphincter muscle as well.

If you suffer from frequent heartburn, more than one or two times a week, you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible. You may have acid reflux, and it is a treatable condition. You first need to figure out what causes your symptoms, and then you can find out how to better handle them, so you don’t have as much pain and irritation. There are many things that you can do to help you control your acid reflux, do your homework, and then make the necessary lifestyle changes to help eliminate your pain and burning caused by your acid reflux. Your doctor will help you determine a plan of action so that you can help alleviate your symptoms, working together with your doctor, you will have a key role in your acid reflux treatment.
