Change Your Ways to Help Your Acid Reflux

Doctors now know that many medical conditions can be treated or at least the symptoms lessened by a patient changing their habits, and acid reflux is one such condition. Depending on the severity of your condition, there are many things that you can do on your own that will help eliminate, or lessen the frequency and severity of your acid reflux attacks. Those who seek medical treatment and change their lifestyles have the best results from their acid reflux treatment, and in this article, we will let you in on some things that you can do which may greatly help you in your acid reflux battle.

Prescription and over the counter medicines can help lessen the symptoms caused by acid reflux, but are not very successful in solving the underlying problem. You should only consider acid reflux medication a temporary solution, and should look at other alternatives before relying on these medications for treating your acid reflux.

Few people think about it, but the position you sleep in could worsen your acid reflux. If you sleep lying flat on your back, you are likely opening the door for digestive juices and stomach acids to flow straight up into your esophagus, leading to acid reflux pain and burning. You could change sleeping positions, or if that isn’t feasible for you, try sleeping on an extra pillow, so that you are not completely flat, which will make it harder for acids to flow upwards. You may even go so far as to raise the head of your bed, which will allow you to lie flat, but in an elevated position, without having to add extra pillows, or learn to sleep in a different way.

It can be hard not to overeat, especially around holiday time, or when it comes to our favorite food, but those who suffer from acid reflux should avoid the urge to overeat at all costs. You should also resist the urge to eat and lie down immediately afterwards, as this will often lead to an acid reflux attack. You should try to eat smaller meals, more frequently during the day, so as to better control your acid reflux symptoms.

You should try to eliminate foods that cause your acid reflux symptoms to worsen from your diet, or at least cut back on them as much as possible. There are some foods that seem to cause almost everyone who has acid reflux distress, such as caffeinated drinks, chocolate, citrus, dairy products, and excessive alcohol consumption, just to name a few. You also want to try to bake or broil your food, as opposed to frying it whenever possible. Smoking has also been linked to worsening acid reflux symptoms, so you should try to quit, or at least cut back.

Try to help control your acid reflux symptoms by rethinking your sleeping position, eating healthier foods, exercise regularly, and cutting back on sodas, alcohol, and smoking. No one is telling you not to eat or do the things you love; just to try to do them in moderation, to at least see if helps your acid reflux. You may be able to make a few lifestyle changes and rid yourself completely of your acid reflux problem, you never know until you try.
